CJI Dipak Misra recommends the name of Justice Ranjan Gagoi as his successor

Dipak Misra, Chief Justice of India (CJI) sent a letter to the Central government recommending Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor.

Dipak Mishra will be retiring on October 02, 2018 and Justice Gogoi will be sworn in as the next CJI on October 3.

Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) governing the appointment of the CJI, demands the recommendation letter from the incumbent be sent at least a month before his date of retirement. MOP also requires that the senior most judge of the Supreme Court be appointed Chief Justice of India.

Last week, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad wrote to the CJI Dipak Misra to recommend the name of his successor.

The CJI has written to the Ministry of Law and Justice endorsing and recommending the name of Justice Gogoi, the senior most judge, as the next CJI.
