CBDT extends due date for filing Tax Audit Reports

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the due date of filing ITRs from September 30, 2018 to October 15, 2018.  The notification came out after various State Associations viz. NICAF, Gujarat Federation, Rajasthan Tax Bar Association filed the writ in concerned high courts for non extending the due date.

The CBDT vide its notification no. 225/358/2018/ITA.II dated September 24, 2018 informed that "On due consideration of representations from various stakeholders for extending the due date, being 30th September, 2018 for filing Income Tax Returns and various reports of audit pertaining to AY 2018-19 for assessees covered under caluse A of explanation 2 to section 139(1) of Income Tax Act, 1961 (Act) read with relevant section of the Act and Income Tax Rules, the CBDT, hereby extends the due date for filing Income Tax Returns as well as reports of audit (which are required to be filed with said specified date) from 30th September 2018 to 15th October, 2018. However, there shall be no extension of the due date for the purpose of explanation 1 to section 234A (interest for default in furnishing returns) of the Act and assessee shall remain liable for payment of interest as per the provisions of section 234A of the Act."

Further, Income Tax India through tweet informed that "CBDT extends due date for filing of Income Tax Returns and Audit reports from 30th Sept, 2018 to 15th Oct, 2018 for all assessees liable to file ITRs for AY 2018-19 by 30.09.2019, after considering the representations from stakeholders. Liability to pay interest u/s 234A of IT Act will remain."
